Samoan Touch Coach Ralphen Viane Attends Australian Sports Commission Conference

The Organisation of Sports Federations of Oceania (OSFO) is pleased to highlight the recent professional development opportunity undertaken by Samoan coach, Ralphen Viane, through the OSFO Scholarship program. Mr. Viane attended the prestigious Australian Sports Commission Coaching and Officiating Conference held in March 2025.

The conference, hosted by the Australian Sports Commission at the GMHBA Stadium in Geelong from March 18-20, 2025, centered on the timely theme of “Connection,” exploring the evolving landscape of coaching and officiating and its impact on sports development and community building.

Reflecting on his experience, Mr. Viane shared, “As a proud recipient of the OSFO scholarship, I had the privilege of attending the Coaching & Officiating Conference. The emphasis on participant-centered approaches and the crucial role of coaches and officials in fostering supportive environments resonated deeply with me.”

He further elaborated on a key takeaway from the conference, stating, “‘Storytelling for Influence’ was a particularly insightful topic, showcasing the power of narrative in sports, exemplified by the Matildas’ effective media strategy. It underscored how storytelling can shape perspectives, enhance officiating practices, and strengthen team cohesion.”

Beyond the formal sessions, the conference provided a valuable platform for networking and knowledge exchange. “Connecting with fellow sports leaders and exchanging ideas on coaching and officiating pathways relevant to Samoa and the wider Pacific region was invaluable,” Mr. Viane noted. “This experience has reinforced the significance of collaboration in nurturing the growth of our sporting communities.”

Mr. Viane extended his sincere gratitude, saying, “A huge fa’afetai tele lava to the Federation of International Touch (FIT), Member Relations Coordinator, Rhonda Togipau, for her steadfast support. This opportunity marks an exciting new chapter for Touch Football in our region, and I am optimistic about Oceania’s increasing presence on the global sporting stage!”

As a member of OSFO, FIT proudly supports such initiatives that empower their members through professional development and contribute to the advancement of sport within the Oceania region. The OSFO Scholarship program remains committed to providing valuable opportunities for individuals like Mr. Viane, fostering growth and excellence in sports across the Pacific.
