The Solomon Islands has taken a bold step toward nurturing top-level talent with the staging of an historic Canoe Sprint coaching course.

Held from March 19 to 24 in the country’s capital, Honiara, the groundbreaking programme brought together 17 aspiring coaches – 10 men and 7 women – from across the nation.

It was the first time the Solomon Islands had hosted an International Canoe Federation Level 1 Canoe Sprint Coaching Course.

Hosted by the Solomon Islands Outrigger and the International Canoe Federation (ICF) and funded through Olympic Solidarity via the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands, the course was facilitated by experienced coach Nathan Luce.

“This coaching course, being the first of its kind hosted in the Solomon Islands, has significantly highlighted the potential for us to grow this sport confidently in our country,” said Solomon Islands Outrigger and Canoe Federation President, Eric Chow.

“Being a nation where canoes and boats remain a vital part of daily life, this programme has given us a fresh perspective on transforming traditional skills into competitive sport.”

Over the five-day programme, participants worked closely together, building camaraderie and mutual motivation.

The coaches created mock training plans, developed personal coaching strategies, and demonstrated the qualities essential for effective coaching.

“Only through support such as this Olympic Solidarity Fund will we excel and develop good athletes and coaches from this region,” said Mr. Chow.

“The support enables us to attend regional qualifiers and help our Olympic dream to come true.”

The camp in the Solomon Islands followed an earlier regional development initiative that took place in December 2025, when athletes from Samoa and the Cook Islands attended a training camp at the Blue Lakes in Rotorua, New Zealand. Last year’s camp was organised by the Oceania Canoe Association (OCA), with support from the Australian Olympic Committee.

The development of canoeing across the region will continue, with more activities planned in the near future.
