Softball Australia Women’s National Team veterans Janice Blackman, Kim Cooper, Chelsea Forkin, Stacey Porter, Kylie Rustin and Robyn Trewick met with the current squad ahead of their ongoing six-game series against Chinese Taipei in Brisbane, passing on a lasting legacy to the next generation of Aussie Spirit players.
The event brought together past and present players to share stories, reflect on the team’s proud history, and welcome new squad members into the Spirit family. It also coincided with the milestone of 500 days to go until the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2027.
Australia Head Coach Kerrie Porter highlighted the importance of the event in strengthening ties across generations and reinforcing the Spirit identity both on and off the diamond.
“Softball has a deep history in Australia. Connecting our alumni with the current team helps our athletes see that they’re not just playing for today, they’re carrying forward the history and pride of everyone who’s worn the green and gold before them,” said Porter.
Olympic medallists Cooper and Porter, together with Tokyo 2020 Olympian Forkin, were joined by World Cup veterans Blackman (2016), Rustin (1986) and Trewick (1978). They shared their experiences, reflecting on the joy of celebrating teammates’ successes and the powerful connections forged in high-pressure moments on the field.
Australia boasts a rich and successful history on the international stage — earning four Olympic medals across five appearances and eight podium finishes in 18 Women’s Softball World Cups, including the 1965 world title. Australia is one of only four nations to have competed in every Olympic softball tournament (alongside Canada, Japan and USA), and one of just two teams — with USA — to have featured in every World Cup to date.
A formal jersey presentation was the centrepiece of the night, with alumni presenting jerseys to the current squad — a symbolic passing of tradition and responsibility from one generation to the next. As part of the ceremony, uncapped Spirit squad members Sarah Beales, Nicole Connacher, Alyssa Mighell and Sara Riou received their first green-and-gold jersey.
Reflecting on the moment, Nicole Connacher said:
“Hearing from the alumni first and then receiving our jerseys was quite amazing. It’s incredible to become part of such a legacy, to see what has come before us and now be part of that is very special.”
