ITTF-Oceania Nauru Development Visit – Aiming High

The nation of Nauru lies in the Micronesian region of Oceania, approximately five hours by plane northeast of Australia. Nauru is the third smallest country in the world (behind Vatican City and Monaco) with an area of 21 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 11,000. From 17-29 April, Nauru hosted an in-country visit through the Oceania Development Program, with Oceania Development Officer Hongbo Liang leading proceedings.

Across 13 days, plenty of activities took place including:

  • A training camp for the National Team.
  • Introductory coach education sessions.
  • Introductory tournament management sessions.
  • Multiple meetings with key dignitaries.
  • School visit sessions.
  • Media and promotional activities.

Nauru has a proud history in Oceania, regularly dominating competition at the Micronesian Games and they have previously won medals including gold at the Oceania Championships. In 2025, Nauru have their eyes set on the upcoming ITTF-Oceania Championships, ITTF-Oceania Youth Championships and the Pacific Mini Games, where they hope to win further medals. Table tennis is popular in Nauru and with further facilities and equipment assistance, table tennis will develop further. They have a core group of players, sound administration and strong governance in place and are a good candidate to take further steps forward in the years ahead.

ITTF-Oceania thanks ITTF for their support of the Oceania Development Program. This visit to Nauru marks the next chapter in what is proving to be a successful relaunch of the program. ITTF-Oceania looks forward to providing assistance where it’s needed to all 24 Member Associations in 2025 and beyond.
